The function of dual wall filters feature is to slow the rate in which the water flows during brewing to get the perfect pressure for a thick crema. This feature work well both pre-ground espresso or freshly ground.
The single wall filter will not slow the rate of the water, so you are going to have to experiment with your grind size, grind amount, and tamp force and make advanced in your espresso making abilities.
